2021 Kitchen Trends: From Blasé to Bold and Beautiful

Writer's picture: Shannon WinterShannon Winter

I am a sucker for a beautiful kitchen. We've all seen that kitchens have really taken center stage in home trends in the last decade. The kitchen is where people gather, so why not have your kitchen be a true reflection of your style just as the rest of your house is? If these 2021 Kitchen trends tell us anything, it's that kitchens are becoming exactly that.

Kitchens with Color

"It's exciting to see people getting away from white kitchens, even though they will always be there," Greenwich, Connecticut–based designer Sarah Blank says. "We're seeing more color in the millwork and islands, along with perimeters, cabinets, and walls. Now so many people spend so much time in there today, why does it have to look so much like the kitchen? Why can’t it have artwork, why can’t it feel morel like the front of the house instead of the old back-of-house that feels dated and instead have the character of the other rooms? It's really becoming the new family room and has a little bit of everything. You have your art and different moods, colors, and materials, and then you can think about the functionality after that. It has to be beautiful." -veranda.com

Aesthetically Pleasing Organization

"A lot of what we've seen is with everyone stuck at home is a focus on function and order," says Memphis-based designer Sean Anderson. "It's all about getting rid of the usual clutter, focusing on organization, and fixing those inconsistencies we had to over look on our normal schedules. Form and function is paramount right now." -veranda.com

The leaders of this trend on aesthetically pleasing form and function? The Home Edit. If you haven't heard of them, they are worth checking out. They'll have you binge-watching their Netflix TV show and running to the container store to buy their entire collection in a hurry.

Bold and Beautiful Backsplash

The walls of your kitchen are brimming with design potential; it just takes the right backsplash to set off your cookspace. “Instead of thinking of backsplashes as an expanse of wall that should be ‘neutral and safe’ so you won’t ‘get tired of it,’ I’m encouraging clients to choose backsplashes they love and resonate with in 2021,” says designer Isabel Ladd of Isabel Ladd Interiors. “That way, you’ll feel joy every time you look at it.”

High Tech and Fancy Fixtures

Now that we’ve gotten very used to washing our hands—and, well, everything—all the time, we’ve also become more aware of our kitchen habits, Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at Masterbrand Cabinets, says. As a result, more people are adding touchless tech into their homes, like trashcans that open and close with the wave of your hand, or Alexa-enabled faucets that can pour exactly a teaspoon or two cups of water (no measuring cups needed), all based on your command. That way, if you have raw chicken on your hands, you don’t have to worry about contaminating your faucet handles (or fighting to nudge them open with your wrist or elbow) as you cook. -purewow.com

While many of us have avoided getting our hands dirty with big renovations this year, smaller projects, like upgrading our kitchen fixtures and finishes, have proved a rewarding and valuable task. Several designers predict a surge in choosing more beautiful fixtures, be they touchless or just extra beautiful. -veranda.com
